Al Hansen

May 1, 2006

Hansen (1927-95) studied with John Cage and appeared in his first group show, in 1959, with Rauschenberg, Dine, Oldenburg, and the late Allan Kaprow. A suite of collages crafted from torn Hershey-bar wrappers shows his witty, Fluxus-inspired merging of image and language, arranging fragments of the iconic brown wrapper’s text ("hey," "hers," "she," and "yes") to create the outline of a woman dubbed Coco. Other works use matches and cigarette butts to shape towers and buxom women. Through April 29. (Rosen, 525 W. 24th St. 212-627-6000.)
